A popular Southern Gospel song “A SINNER SAVED BY GRACE” was written by Bill & Gloria Gaither at the request of friend George Younce. George was a famous bass vocalist with the Cathedral Quartet that the Gaithers regularly toured with over the years. One night after a concert George said, “The Cathedrals are going back into the studio to record soon. I’d love it if you two would write me a song. You know my story; I’m just an old sinner saved by grace.”

George had been referring to his history of a young man lying about his age, running away to become a paratrooper followed by several years of alcohol abuse. But after rededicating his life to Jesus, he never looked back. He spent more than 40 years traveling, winning music awards and witnessing to Christ-but he always referred to himself as an “old sinner saved by Grace”! So, using these words from Ephesians-For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-this is not from ourselves, it is the gift of God.-they wrote this song for George.

If you could see what I once was—

If you could go with me

Back to where I started from,

Then I know you would see

The miracle of love that took

Me in its sweet embrace

And made me what I am today—

A sinner saved by grace

Once heard, hundreds of people across the country said “You wrote this song about me!” Though the details may differ from story to story, we all are sinners—saved only by the wonderful grace of God.
